She wasn't supposed to be in control. That's what was so disconcerting for Pepper this evening. She was supposed to be the navigator, he was supposed to be in the captain's seat. At the rudder.

It wasn't that she couldn't do it; immediate tasks were, always, simple enough. It just wasn't supposed to be this way. She shook her head at that thought as she was unlocking the car and seating him. Yes, the unorthodox parking helped. It had been convenient for her coming out too, odd as it looked. Again, she realized how close to addicted she was to how what he did always could work out, if the rest of the world played along.

The way she did her best to play along. Because she'd go a long, long way to prevent the appearance of the hurt of failure in his eyes. Not letting him fall was just... important.

She walked around the car and got in to the driver's seat. Turning the key made the radio power up too and her hand rose to tune it a little down - just in case Tony was saying something she needed to hear. It was Meat Loaf, doing his take on a song first sung by Celine Dion. Duet with a girl she always forgot the name of, no matter how many times she looked it up. In a way, it had lyrics that could be tuned out. Nothing was there to come back to them. Was there. Well, at least nothing in the context of the song.

Now, Pepper Potts was a reasonable driver. She didn't get to do it all the time, what with cars waiting for her often enough to take her where she was expected to go; but she was still good enough at it. However, she wasn't prepared for this little monster.
Of course, all it took was one lurch on the gas, and one of the breaks, to realize how powerful engine + lightweight car had to be handled, but she still hissed under her breath a word she'd not care to repeat out loud - after all, she hadn't for a long, long time - and looked aside to the passenger seat. "I'm sorry, Mr. Stark. It'll be smoother now." And it was; she was mostly the never-make-the-same-mistake-twice sort of person.

If not driving quite as fast as when he'd driven them here.

Good thing she was paying attention on the way here, right?
